International Workshop "Towards an Arab Democracy Project"
In its efforts to develop an Arab Democracy Project, both political and social, and in order to contribute to the aspirations towards democratic Arab countries benefitting from sustainable development, ADF, the Community of Democracies Forum and the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) Forum organized an international workshop, entitled "Towards an Arab Democracy Project" on 09-10 January 2011 in Doha. The workshop that aimed to exchange expertise and experiences and identify the democratic process challenges in the region, was attended by more than forty participants, representing the most important activists, academics and representatives of civil society organizations from Qatar, the Arab region, Iran, Turkey, the US, Europe, and Latin America.
The participants discussed public perceptions of democracy in the Middle East, enabling and protecting civil society in the region in light of the regional developments, democracy education, gender discrimination, corporate social responsibility, and democratic development. The workshop concluded with the drafting of a preliminary set of recommendations to be submitted to the Ministerial Meeting of the Community of Democracies, which will be held in 2011 in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius.
On the other hand, the consultation meeting, organized in parallel to the above-mentioned workshop and dedicated to the West Asia and North Africa Social Charter, ended with the adoption of a draft reflecting the aspirations of the peoples of this particular region for a better future. The final version of the Charter will be presented during the third annual meeting of the WANA Forum to be held in Amman on 8-10 May 2011.
