Forum for the Future VII: Final CSO Meeting
With Qatar and Canada as co-chairs of the Seventh Forum for the Future, the Arab Democracy Foundation (ADF), the Qatar National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), and the International Development Research Centre in Canada (IDRC), members of the coordination preparatory committee, organized the final CSO meeting on 11 January 2001 in Doha. The meeting was officially opened by H.E. Mr. Mohamed bin Abdullah Al-Rumaihi, Assistant-Minister for Foreign Affairs and Chair of the permanent committee for conference organization in Qatar, Mr. Bob Paquin, representative of the Canadian ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mohsen Marzouk, Secretary-General of ADF, Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al-Marri, Chair of the NHRC, and Dr. Lauchlan Munroe, Vice-President of the IDRC. The meeting was attended by about 100 CSO representatives from the Arab region and the G8 countries.
The meeting was the occasion to discuss the outputs of the three regional preparatory workshops held in Doha, Istanbul, and Beirut around the themes of peaceful resolution of conflicts and democratic transition, the private sector and corporate social responsibility, and youth participation. The participants also had the chance to learn about the findings of the national seminars organized in Tunisia, Jordan, Bahrain, and Yemen. The recommendations of the three preparatory workshops are to be presented to the ministerial meeting to take place on 13 January 2011.
Moreover, the ADF Secretary-General called for the establishment of permanent reform and development forums in every Arab country, similar to the Forum for the Future mechanisms, to be founded by local powers from the governments, CSOs, and the private sector. This effective partnership would allow for developing national strategies to help face up the existing challenges in the region.
