ADF participated in the activities of the first gender equality preparatory workshop of the 8th Future Forum, co-chaired by Kuwait and France. The workshop started with a speech delivered on behalf of ADF by the Director of Programs and Research Mrs. Wafa Ben Haj Omar who spoke about the Arab revolutions and their impact with regards to achieving more gender equality especially in regards to political participation. Mrs. Ben Haj Omar spoke about how the concrete achievements reached by Tunisian women for instance, who won total and unquestionable gender parity in the electoral lists.
The workshop lasted for two days and was attended by a number of civil society representatives from France and the Arab region. The discussions dealt with political rights, women’s direct access to political and public life, including civil rights to ensure equality and justice in laws of personal status, social rights, the global framework for protecting women’s rights and equality in human rights. The participants also conferred aboutnational strategies to mobilizing support for human rights in general and women’s rights in particular.
The workshop concluded with the issuing of a final statement which included a number of recommendations featuring a review of national laws which would conform to international conventions and amendment or issuing of new laws and legislation to promote non-discrimination and guarantee liberties.
